Android photos and location
Camera capture and choosing an existing photo are optional. New images use a private upload-processing pipeline that re-encodes the image and checks the output for EXIF, XMP and IPTC metadata before attachment. The job is marked ready only after the storage service acknowledges removal of its quarantined original. If processing or deletion fails, the original can remain pending retry or scheduled cleanup; physical deletion is not guaranteed immediately or during a service failure. This protection does not retrospectively sanitize older uploads. Videos are validated but copied without metadata stripping, so video files can retain metadata. Image metadata removal does not hide the Spot location you choose to share.
Location is requested when you choose a location-dependent action, such as My Location or a Trail check-in. The Android app does not request background location. You can browse without granting location access. A check-in requires sufficient location accuracy.
Photos attached to a Public Spot can be seen by other users. Review the Spot before contributing. You can report content or block users in the app and delete your account from Account. For privacy requests, contact support@dropthespot.com.

Sensitive Information. When necessary, with your consent or as otherwise permitted by applicable law, we process account login information and precise geolocation for authentication and the location-dependent features you choose.
Social Login Data. You may use email and password or Google sign-in where offered. With Google sign-in, we receive identifiers and profile information supplied for authentication, which may include your name, email address and profile picture. We do not import your Google contacts or friends list. See "HOW DO WE HANDLE YOUR SOCIAL LOGINS?" below.
Application Data. If you use our application(s), we also may collect the following information if you choose to provide us with access or permission:
Geolocation Information. Foreground device location is optional and used when you request location-dependent functions, such as My Location or a Trail proximity check-in. The Android app does not request background location. You can browse without granting device-location permission and change permission in device settings. A Spot’s saved location can be visible to people allowed to access that Spot.
We use this information to provide the features you choose, maintain security and operation, troubleshoot problems, and understand technical usage and performance.
All personal information that you provide to us must be true, complete, and accurate, and you must notify us of any changes to such personal information.
2. HOW DO WE PROCESS YOUR INFORMATION?
In Short: We process your information to provide, improve, and administer our Services, communicate with you, for security and fraud prevention, and to comply with law. We may also process your information for other purposes with your consent.
We process your personal information for a variety of reasons, depending on how you interact with our Services, including:
To facilitate account creation and authentication and otherwise manage user accounts. We may process your information so you can create and log in to your account, as well as keep your account in working order.

To comply with our legal obligations. We may process your information to comply with our legal obligations, respond to legal requests, and exercise, establish, or defend our legal rights.
3. WHEN AND WITH WHOM DO WE SHARE YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION?
In Short: We may share information in specific situations described in this section and/or with the following third parties.
Vendors, Consultants, and Other Third-Party Service Providers. We may share your data with third-party vendors, service providers, contractors, or agents ("third parties") who perform services for us or on our behalf and require access to such information to do that work.
Supabase: authenticates accounts and stores our application database, uploaded files and realtime message data. Depending on the features used, this includes account/profile identifiers, authentication information, age-eligibility acknowledgements, Spots and saved coordinates, selected media, Trail activity, Groups, relationships, messages and reports. These are Spot Drop records hosted by Supabase, not data sent to every provider listed here.
Vercel: hosts the website and backend endpoints. It processes network/request information such as IP addresses and device/browser details, and the account identifiers, authentication tokens and feature data carried by requests to those endpoints. Server-side image processing also runs here. Website Analytics processes page-view and technical usage information, such as visited URLs, referrers and device/browser characteristics; this is separate from the application records stored in Supabase.
Mapbox: supplies map styles, tiles and map-related technical usage/performance services. It receives requested map areas or coordinates, network/device/browser information and map-load/performance events. Our integration does not send our account database or private message history to Mapbox.
Geoapify: provides place-name/address search through our backend. It receives the submitted search text and technical request information from our server. The place-search integration does not send the user's Spot Drop account identifier or message history to Geoapify. Search text can itself contain an address or other personal information you enter.
Resend: delivers transactional authentication emails sent by Supabase. It receives recipient email addresses, email content including authentication links, and delivery-related information. It does not receive the Spot or messaging database for this purpose.
Google authentication: when you choose Google sign-in, Google handles the sign-in request and supplies account identifiers, email, and available profile name/picture information to our authentication service. The password for your Google Account is entered with Google, not collected by Spot Drop. Our sign-in integration does not import your Google contacts or send your Spot Drop message history to Google.
We also may need to share your personal information in the following situations:
Business Transfers. We may share or transfer your information in connection with, or during negotiations of, any merger, sale of company assets, financing, or acquisition of all or a portion of our business to another company.
Other Users. Your chosen Spot visibility controls who can access that Spot through Spot Drop. Public contributions may be viewed by others and copied or shared outside the Services. Friends Only and Private content is subject to access controls. Profiles and community features have their own visibility rules. Google sign-in does not automatically publish your Spot Drop activity to your Google contacts.
Direct messaging begins with a request. The recipient must accept before the conversation continues; users can disable new requests, decline, block and report. Message history is restricted to authorized conversation participants through application and database controls. Report information may be processed for safety and moderation. Messages are encrypted in transit; Spot Drop does not claim end-to-end encryption.
4. DO WE USE COOKIES AND OTHER TRACKING TECHNOLOGIES?
In Short: We may use cookies and other tracking technologies to collect and store your information.
We use cookies or local storage as appropriate to keep you signed in, remember preferences, and support security and core service functions. The hosted website uses Vercel Analytics. Our maps use Mapbox, which processes map requests and technical usage and performance events. Spot Drop also stores interactions needed for features such as saved Spots, Trail progress and messaging.
The current Android beta does not display advertisements or request Android’s Advertising ID. We do not use the current app to deliver personalized advertisements or abandoned-shopping-cart reminders. These statements do not mean that no technical usage information is collected.
You can manage cookies through your browser settings; blocking necessary storage can affect sign-in and other features. Contact support@dropthespot.com with privacy questions. Applicable privacy rights are described below.
5. HOW DO WE HANDLE YOUR SOCIAL LOGINS?
In Short: If you choose to register or log in to our Services using a social media account, we may have access to certain information about you.
Our Services offer Google sign-in where available. If you choose it, we receive the account identifiers and profile information Google supplies for authentication, which may include your name, email address and profile picture. We do not import your Google contacts or friends list. We use this information for authentication and account operation.
We will use the information we receive only for the purposes that are described in this Privacy Notice or that are otherwise made clear to you on the relevant Services. Please note that we do not control, and are not responsible for, other uses of your personal information by your third-party social media provider. We recommend that you review their privacy notice to understand how they collect, use, and share your personal information, and how you can set your privacy preferences on their sites and apps.
6. HOW LONG DO WE KEEP YOUR INFORMATION?
In Short: We keep your information for as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes outlined in this Privacy Notice unless otherwise required by law.
We will only keep your personal information for as long as it is necessary for the purposes set out in this Privacy Notice, unless a longer retention period is required or permitted by law (such as tax, accounting, or other legal requirements). Account information is generally retained while your account is active. Deletion and the legal, security and backup exceptions described in this notice can extend beyond account closure.
When we have no ongoing legitimate business need to process your personal information, we will either delete or anonymize such information, or, if this is not possible (for example, because your personal information has been stored in backup archives), then we will securely store your personal information and isolate it from any further processing until deletion is possible.
7. HOW DO WE KEEP YOUR INFORMATION SAFE?
In Short: We aim to protect your personal information through a system of organizational and technical security measures.
We have implemented appropriate and reasonable technical and organizational security measures designed to protect the security of any personal information we process. However, despite our safeguards and efforts to secure your information, no electronic transmission over the Internet or information storage technology can be guaranteed to be 100% secure, so we cannot promise or guarantee that hackers, cybercriminals, or other unauthorized third parties will not be able to defeat our security and improperly collect, access, steal, or modify your information. Although we will do our best to protect your personal information, transmission of personal information to and from our Services is at your own risk. You should only access the Services within a secure environment.
8. DO WE COLLECT INFORMATION FROM MINORS?
In Short: We do not knowingly collect data from or market to children under 13 years of age.
We do not knowingly collect, solicit data from, or market to children under 13 years of age, nor do we knowingly sell such personal information. By using the Services, you represent that you are at least 13 and, if you are a minor in your jurisdiction, have parental permission to use the Services. If we learn that personal information from users less than 13 years of age has been collected, we will deactivate the account and take reasonable measures to promptly delete such data from our records. If you become aware of any data we may have collected from children under age 13, please contact us at support@dropthespot.com. Alcohol Trails separately require a 21+ acknowledgement.
9. WHAT ARE YOUR PRIVACY RIGHTS?
In Short: You may review, change, or terminate your account at any time, depending on your country, province, or state of residence.
Withdrawing your consent: If we are relying on your consent to process your personal information, which may be express and/or implied consent depending on the applicable law, you have the right to withdraw your consent at any time. You can withdraw your consent at any time by contacting us by using the contact details provided in the section "HOW CAN YOU CONTACT US ABOUT THIS NOTICE?" below.
However, please note that this will not affect the lawfulness of the processing before its withdrawal nor, when applicable law allows, will it affect the processing of your personal information conducted in reliance on lawful processing grounds other than consent.
Account Information
If you would like to review or change account information, use your profile and Account settings. To request account deletion, use Delete Account in account settings or visit https://dropthespot.com/delete-account. You can also contact support@dropthespot.com.
After a successful account deletion, the sign-in account and profile are removed. Database relationships also remove the user's owned Spots and their linked records, comments, likes, ratings, saved Spots, follows/friendships/blocks, hosted meetups and invitations, Groups the user created and associated memberships, notifications and reports linked to the deleted records, Routes/Waypoints, achievements and recognition assignments, Trail participation/check-ins, username-change records, and direct-message conversations involving the account, including their messages and read state. Removing a Group or conversation can also remove associated records belonging to other participants.
Some records survive with an account reference cleared: photos contributed to another user's surviving Spot, published Trail definitions, condition flags on surviving Spots, administrative audit entries and media-processing job records. Clearing that reference is not a guarantee of anonymization: retained content, paths, hashes or audit details may still identify a person. The automated deletion flow does not remove all such records. Contact support@dropthespot.com to request removal of remaining personal content or associated data.
Storage files are separate from database records. The account handler attempts limited cleanup of the user's spot-media folders; it does not synchronously erase every uploaded file or avatar. Scheduled media cleanup can remove eligible unreferenced outputs and quarantined originals, but referenced contributions can remain, older files may not have processing records, and failures or service availability can delay cleanup. There is no verified fixed deadline for erasing every file or backup.
Backup copies and information retained where necessary for security, fraud prevention or legal requirements may remain beyond account closure. These exceptions do not mean that every retained contribution is required by law. If the deletion flow reports an error, it may already have removed some records; contact support rather than assuming the request completed. Account deletion cannot be undone through the app.
Cookies and similar technologies: Most Web browsers are set to accept cookies by default. If you prefer, you can usually choose to set your browser to remove cookies and to reject cookies. If you choose to remove cookies or reject cookies, this could affect certain features or services of our Services.
If you have questions or comments about your privacy rights, you may email us at support@dropthespot.com.
10. CONTROLS FOR DO-NOT-TRACK FEATURES
Most web browsers and some mobile operating systems and mobile applications include a Do-Not-Track ("DNT") feature or setting you can activate to signal your privacy preference not to have data about your online browsing activities monitored and collected. At this stage, no uniform technology standard for recognizing and implementing DNT signals has been finalized. As such, we do not currently respond to DNT browser signals or any other mechanism that automatically communicates your choice not to be tracked online. If a standard for online tracking is adopted that we must follow in the future, we will inform you about that practice in a revised version of this Privacy Notice.
California law requires us to let you know how we respond to web browser DNT signals. Because there currently is not an industry or legal standard for recognizing or honoring DNT signals, we do not respond to them at this time.
11. DO UNITED STATES RESIDENTS HAVE SPECIFIC PRIVACY RIGHTS?
In Short: If you are a resident of California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Oregon, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, or Virginia, you may have the right to request access to and receive details about the personal information we maintain about you and how we have processed it, correct inaccuracies, get a copy of, or delete your personal information. You may also have the right to withdraw your consent to our processing of your personal information. These rights may be limited in some circumstances by applicable law. More information is provided below.
