About this spot
A former railroad tunnel with a very different rush hour: seasonal bat viewing, a short nature trail, birdwatching and railroad-history signs south of Fredericksburg. This is a researched public destination, not a report of a personal visit. TPWD lists the trail open sunrise to 5 p.m. year-round. During May through October, everyone staying after 5 p.m. needs an advance bat-viewing ticket; tickets are not sold on-site and sightings are not guaranteed. Children under 4 cannot use the lower viewing area. Bring drinking water and save your ticket before arriving because cell service is limited. No pets, camping, smoking or alcohol. Stay on the marked trail and do not approach the tunnel. The pin uses TPWD's published park headquarters coordinates, not the tunnel entrance. Official visitor details and current alerts: https://tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/old-tunnel . Information checked October 28, 2026.
